7 Best Things to Do in Vis Croatia

Top things to do Vis Croatia | Wanderalot

Vis is a tiny Croatian island in the middle of the Adriatic Sea. About two hours off the coast of Split, Vis is a of sun-drenched rolling hills and vineyards, medieval towns, and pebbly beaches hugging crystal clear seas.

Vis is the kind of island that begs to be explored on the back of a moped. Pick one up at any of the tourism agencies and cruise through the sleepy island. I visited in June and it was the perfect time to visit Vis.

Here are the 7 best things to do in Vis, Croatia.

1. Vis Town

Vis is a charming town surrounding a harbor filled with bobbing yachts. If you take the ferry from Split it will deposit you here. I recommend staying there and taking day trips to the rest of the island.

2. Stiniva Beach

One of Vis’ best beaches, Stiniva is nestled between two cliff faces. Its pool is calm and clear. The hike down takes about twenty minutes and is (slightly) treacherous. Wear sneakers. There’s a bar on the beach.

To get there: Hire a cab in Vis or Komiza and ask them to pick you up at a set time. Or (highly recommended) rent a moped for your entire stay. Or you can take a water taxi – which I wish I would have tried.

3. Komiza

Komiza is on the other side of the island from Vis. There’s a public bus that connects the two, along with taxis. Spend an evening eating lobster at one of Komiza’s fine restaurants or take a stroll through the cobblestone streets.

4. Blue Grotto (Bisevo)

Off the coast of Komiza, there’s a natural cave where light hits off the sea floor and illuminates the walls of the cave in an otherworldly blue. Pick up tickets for the ride over at any of the tourism shops in Komiza. Don’t miss your chance to visit the Bue Cave!

5. Stoncica Beach

This sandy beach has practically Caribbean water, perfectly calm and clear. The beach is narrow but the water makes this beach definitely worth a stop. Park at the end of the road and follow the dirt path straight down to the beach.

6. Wine Tasting

Hop on your moped and cruise through inland Vis. Stop at any of the many vineyards for wine and olive oil tasting. Their red wine might be the best I’ve ever had.

7. Kut

A pleasant 15 – 20 minute stroll along the bay from Vis, Kut is a beautiful town of winding stone staircases and overflowing gardens.

To get there:

Fly to Split (SPU) and take a ferry over:

The ferry is a lovely two hour jaunt through the Dalmatian Archipelago. I hope you go on a sunny day – it’s a real treat. You can book you ferry tickets at the dock or online.

Where to stay:

I stayed with Nautic Apartments and loved my one bedroom plus kitchenette. If they’re booked, check out:

Want to party?

Consider a week-long yacht trip from Split to Dubrovnik (or vice versa). You’ll hit a handful of islands and make a ton of new friends. Fair warning – this caters to the young, drinking crowd.

Or head up to Novalja and dance the night away at Zrce beach.

OK to go solo?

Absolutely! If this solo female traveler can do this trip with ease so can you. Enjoy!
